Everyone has a desire to have a chiseled jawline and attractive facial profile. But, when you look in the mirror, you are unsatisfied with an extra part that is bulging out underneath your chin. This is a double chin also called submental fullness which develops when an extra layer of fat usually deposits beneath your chin or around your neck area. A double chin can result from a variety of causes including age, poor diet, genetic, and posture.
Fortunately, there are two options available to get rid of double chin – surgical and non-surgical.
The use of the surgical process has gone because of the use of anesthesia and the risks associated with it such as bruising, swelling, bleeding, and loose or saggy skin. Nowadays, there are several non-surgical ways are available to get rid of the double chin.
Ways to Get Rid of Double Chin without Surgery
Eat a Healthy Diet
Following a healthy diet plays a vital role in helping to lose weight and to reduce the appearance of a double chin naturally. Despite exercise, what you eat and how much you eat is an important element in maintaining a healthy weight or losing weight.
Studies have shown that a low carbohydrate diet, high protein intake, and moderate fat consumption have positive effects on your weight maintenance or losing weight. (Sources – 1, 2, 3, 4)
Losing overall weight can reduce the fat from your chin thus can result in a reduced double chin.

Mesotherapy
Mesotherapy is a non-surgical technique that uses micro-injections of vitamins, amino acids, enzymes, hormones, and plant extracts to reduce submental fat. It was developed by a France physician in 1952 which was previously used to relieve pain and to treat vascular disorders.
Now, this technique is being used to reduce double chin, cellulite, fade lines, and wrinkles on the skin, tighten the skin, and to treat hair loss. This technique involves injections of a series of very fine needles containing various medications into the mesoderm, the layer of fat underneath your skin. When these medications are inserted into your mesoderm, the underlying fat starts to melt, result in fat reduction.
During this treatment, you have to undergo a series of sessions which can take 25 to 60 minutes. Each session can cost you anywhere from $250 to $500 and might take up to 10 sessions.
Kybella
Kybella is the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved non-surgical injectable medicine used to dissolve moderate to severe double chin which was approved on 29 April 2015. (Source – 5)
This process uses a series of injections of deoxycholic acid, a fat-absorbing material your body produces naturally, to target the fat cells in the chin area. When injected into the fat underneath the chin, it causes the destruction of fat cells. Once destroyed, the fat cells can no longer store or accumulate fat.
The procedure usually involves up to 50 injections in a single session and may take up to 6 sessions no less than one month apart. The cost of Kybella treatment may depend on the number of sessions you have to undergo and may cost between $1,200 and $1,800.
Although Kybella is non-surgical, some common side effects may include swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness, and areas of hardness around the treatment area.
Cryolipolysis
Cryolipolysis, also known as CoolSculpting, is a non-invasive fat freezing technique that uses cold temperature to reduce double chin. In April 2014 the FDA has approved the CoolSculpting procedure to treat subcutaneous fat. (Source – 6)
Besides, studies have reported that people who have been treated with Cryolipolysis lost an average of 14.67 to 28.5 percent of the fat in few months after the initial treatment. (Sources – 7, 8)
This technique uses a paddle-like suction device that triggers the death of fat cells without affecting other cells. The theory is that fat cells are susceptible to damage from cold temperature and then eliminate from your body naturally.
The procedure usually may vary from 35 minutes to 70 minutes for each session and requires at least two treatment sessions occurring in a gap of 4 weeks to provide you the best result. The average cost of CoolSculpting for the double chin range from $700 to $1400.
If you are sensitive to the cold temperature, you may experience some side effects which includes tingling, stinging, temporary redness at the treatment area, and pinching.
Ultherapy
Ultherapy, commonly called as Ulthera System, is an FDA-cleared non-invasive ultrasound-based chin, and neck tightening system. (Source – 9) It utilizes ultrasound energy to denature and contract the collagen that leads to additional collagen synthesis and remodeling. When collagen levels are restored, the chin returns to its natural fullness and firmness.
The procedure takes around 45 minutes to one hour and can lift the skin under the chin with just a single treatment. There is usually no downtime associated with Ultherapy. The cost for treating the lower face and neck may come in the range of $1,800 to $3,800.
The common side effects it can cause may include swelling, redness, soreness, bruising, and numbness or tingling.
Profound
Profound is a radiofrequency-based treatment that tightens the loose or saggy skin under the chin and neck area without surgery. It is clinically proven to recreate three vital skin elements – elastin, collagen, and hyaluronic acid.
This treatment strategy uses microneedles fitted with electrodes to deliver temperature-controlled radiofrequency energy to the dermis or subcutaneous fat layer of the skin. This causes controlled heating of the deep dermal layer of the skin, which improves collagen and elastin formation, thus tightening the skin.
The procedure can take 1 session of up to 1 hour and require 6 – 8 months to provide you the best result. There are 5 – 7 days of downtime associated with Profound.
The common side effect may include moderate swelling or bruising on the treatment area which typically recovers within 5 -7 days.
Thermage
Like Profound, Thermage is also a radiofrequency-based treatment that tightens the loose or saggy skin under the chin and neck area without surgery. This technique uses radiofrequency energy to deeply heat the skin underneath the chin which stimulates collagen growth resulting in tighten and rejuvenate chin.
The procedure can take 1 session of 30 to 90 minutes and the result can last for 1-2 years depending on your skin condition and aging process. There is usually little or no downtime associated with Thermage. The common side effect may include temporary swelling or redness on the treatment area which typically recovers in 24 hours.
VelaShape III
VelaShape III uses infrared light, radiofrequency energy, and mechanical massage/vacuum procedure to reduce double chin without surgery. The treatment works by reaching a specifically targeted temperature within the skin which increases the metabolism of fat under the chin. It, as a result, causes fat to melt resulting in a smoother chin.
The treatment procedure can last for 3 to 5 sessions with a gap of 2 weeks to deliver you an optimal result. There is no downtime or recovery period associated with this treatment. The VelaShape III treatment may cost you on average of $500.
The common side effect may include redness, bruising, or blistering which can last for few days.
Accent Body Contouring
Accent Body Contouring uses dual-layer radiofrequency, Unipolar and Bipolar, procedures to reduce double chin without surgery. The treatment works by delivering dual radiofrequency energy within the skin through two temperature adjustable applicators to provide deep thermal heating to two distinct depths of tissues. By treating two layers of the skin, this treatment effectively reduces fat cell around the chin area.
The treatment procedure may last for 3 to 6 sessions to deliver you an optimal result and there is no downtime. The Accent Body Contouring treatment may cost you anywhere between $1000 and $4800.
The common side effect may include redness, or swelling which can last for three to four hours.
SculpSure
SculpSure uses laser-based technology to reduce a double chin without surgery. This technology relies on a natural process called lipolysis that eliminates stubborn fatty tissue from the chin. This treatment system directs heat from the laser to raise the temperature of fat cells beneath the skin until they are destroyed. After the treatment, those disrupted fat cells are naturally eliminated from the body after 4 to 6 weeks.
The treatment procedure takes an average of 25 minutes each season and there is no downtime. The number of sessions depends on how much chin fat you want to eliminate. Although, it takes six weeks to provide you first result and may take up to 12 weeks for full result. The starting SculpSure treatment may cost you approximately $750 per treatment and may go up to $1500.
The common side effects may include soreness and stiffness, stinging or bruising.
Facial Exercises
Doing facial exercises can help you to tone your facial muscles, increase blood circulation, and to correct loose or sagging skin in the area of your chin. There are various facial exercises that you can perform to reduce your double chin. Besides, you should aim to perform your facial exercises 3-5 times a week.
Ball Exercise
Place a tennis ball under your chin and press your chin tightly against the ball as much as you can. Do this exercise for 15 – 20 repetitions daily.
